Scotland have "mentality to make history" - McGinn

Scotland are looking to reach the knockout stages of the UEFA European Championship for the first time.

Although they have won just two of their last nine competitive matches, midfielder John McGinn believes they have the mentality and capability to prove people wrong.

Scotland are currently third in Group E, two points behind second-placed Italy and four points behind leaders Croatia.

They need to beat Hungary in Budapest on Tuesday to keep their hopes of reaching the last 16 alive.

"We've got the mentality to make history and stay in the tournament," said McGinn.

"We've got the players to do it, we've got the belief to do it, and we're going to go out there and give it everything we've got."

Scotland have never reached the knockout stages of a major tournament since making their debut at the 1998 World Cup.

They have come close on a few occasions, most notably in 2016 when they lost to England in the round of 16 at Euro 2016.

But McGinn believes this is the year that Scotland can finally break their duck.

"We're all desperate to make history for our country," he said.

"We know it's going to be a tough game, but we're up for the challenge.

"We're going to go out there and give it everything we've got, and hopefully we can make the nation proud."
