Bannon Ordered to Report to Prison

Former Trump Ally Sentenced to Four Months

For Contempt of Congress

A federal judge has ordered Steve Bannon, a longtime ally of former President Donald Trump, to report to prison by July 1 for his conviction for defying a subpoena from the Jan. 6 House select committee.

Bannon, 68, was found guilty in July 2022 of two counts of contempt of Congress for refusing to cooperate with the committee's investigation into the Capitol riot. He was sentenced to four months in prison and fined $6,500.

In a brief order issued Thursday, U.S. District Judge Carl Nichols denied Bannon's request to delay his surrender date while he appeals his conviction. The judge said that Bannon "has not presented any new arguments or evidence that would warrant a stay of his sentence at this time."

Bannon is expected to appeal his conviction to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit. However, it is not clear whether the appeals court will grant Bannon's request for a stay of his sentence while his appeal is pending.
