Madeleine McCann: 17 years on
Girl's disappearance still 'aches' say parents
Operation Grange police investigation continues
On 3 May 2007, three-year-old Madeleine McCann disappeared from her family's holiday apartment in Praia da Luz, Portugal. Seventeen years on, her parents have said her absence still "aches".
Kate and Gerry McCann said in a statement: "This year marks 17 years since Madeleine was taken from us. It is a long time but the pain of her absence never goes away. We long for the day when we can finally find out what happened to her and bring those responsible to justice."
The Metropolitan Police's Operation Grange investigation into Madeleine's disappearance is still ongoing. In 2020, German authorities announced that they were investigating a 45-year-old German man, Christian Brückner, on suspicion of Madeleine's murder.
The investigation has been hampered by a lack of evidence, but police have said they believe there is enough to charge Brückner. He is currently in prison in Germany for the rape of a 72-year-old woman in Portugal in 2005.
