Fall of the Soviet Union
Dissolution Process Begins
Congress of Peoples Deputies Votes for Change
In mid-September, the USSR Congress of Peoples Deputies took a historic vote to work towards forming a Union of Sovereign States. This vote marked the beginning of the dissolution process of the Soviet Union, which had been in existence for nearly 70 years.
The Congress was convened in response to the growing unrest within the Soviet Union. The economy was in shambles, and there was widespread dissatisfaction with the communist government. The vote to dissolve the Soviet Union was a reflection of the desire for change among the Soviet people.
The Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) was formed in December 1991, in the wake of the dissolution of the Soviet Union. The CIS is a regional intergovernmental organization that consists of 10 of the 15 former Soviet republics. The CIS promotes cooperation among its member states in areas such as economic development, environmental protection, and security.
